5 arrested for trying to extort money posing as RTI activists in Hubballi

The Hubballi Gokul Road Station Police have nabbed a gang of five persons who posed as RTI activists to extort money from officials of a co-operative society in Hubballi, Karnataka.
Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar gave the names of the arrested persons as Manjunath Haddannavar from Gadag (prime accused), Vireshkumar Lingadal, Mahadeshwar Lingadal, Mahabaleshwar Shirur and Shivappa Bommanahalli of Mundgod in Uttara Kannada district.
The gang reportedly targeted co-operative banks and government officials posing as RTI activists.
The police swung into action after officials of Samruddhi Co-operative Society filed a complaint with Gokul Road Police that a gang had demanded ₹1.5 crore after accusing them of engaging in malpractices.
The gang members were caught when they arrived to take an advance on the sum agreed upon. An amount of ₹1.70 lakh has been seized from the accused persons.
