Registration number HR 88B8888 was up for auction on the government portal at fancy.parivahan.gov.in. For the aforementioned Haryana registration with six ‘8’s and one ‘B,’ which gives an illusion of seven ‘8’s in a succession, there were 45 applications.

Bidders had to pay Rs 11,000 during the application, which includes Rs 1,000 in registration fees and the rest as a security deposit.

The base price for the bidding was set at Rs 50,000. At 12 pm the bidding price was at Rs 88 lakh and by the end of the day at 5 pm the highest bidder had placed Rs 1.17 crore for the registration number, a national record.

The HR in the number represents the state of registration, Haryana, whereas the initial digit 88 indicates the specific Regional Transport Office (RTO). The letter ‘B’ in the registration refers to the vehicle series code within the RTO. Finally, the last four digits are uniquely assigned to the vehicle.
