A sub-inspector of police and a head constable were placed under suspension following their arrest on the charge of accepting a bribe of ₹5,000 on Wednesday (February 19, 2025).

According to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), the complainant J. Vincent Selvakumar, a taxi driver, had met with an accident involving a two-wheeler. The rider of the two-wheeler, who sustained minor injuries, lodged a complaint, based on which the Traffic Investigation Wing, West District, Anna Nagar, Greater Chennai Police, registered an FIR against Selvakumar on January 5, 2025.

His original driving licence and the vehicle’s registration certificate were seized by G. Lakshmanaperumal, Sub-Inspector, and Vijayabasker, Head Constable. The duo later demanded a bribe of ₹5,000 from Selvakumar to return the said documents.

Unwilling to give the bribe, Selvakumar approached the DVAC and lodged a complaint. A case was registered. As part of a DVAC trap on Wednesday, the complainant gave the bribe amount to Vijayabasker, who collected it on the instruction of Lakshmanaperumal. Both of them were later arrested by the DVAC.
