Ramadoss slams T.N. govt. for not making Tamil a compulsory subject in educational institutions

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss on Thursday (February 20, 2025) condemned the State government for not having taken steps to make Tamil a compulsory subject in educational institutions in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement, he said there was no point in celebrating International Mother Language Day in Tamil Nadu without taking steps to develop the Tamil language. He recalled making an eight-day journey, called ‘Tamilai Thedi’ (In search of Tamil), from Chennai to Madurai to raise awareness on the importance of Tamil in 2023.

Further, the PMK leader said in all countries, their respective mother tongue is the medium of instruction in educational institutions. “Only in Tamil Nadu, one could get a degree without studying the Tamil language. What steps has the DMK government taken to change this situation,” he asked.

“Making Tamil a compulsory subject and medium of instruction in educational institutions is as important as opposing the three-language policy. Without doing so, merely opposing the three-language policy would be seen as politics of opportunism and betrayal of the Tamil language,” Dr. Ramadoss charged.
