K Damodharan, popularly known as Chef Damu, is a television personality, teacher, author, and holder of three world records. As of December 30, he adds another feather to his cap as a wedding planner. Through his latest venture, Chef Damu’s Suvaiyin Sangeetham – Caters and Events, he aims to not only cater weddings but also plan them.
“I have been cooking for 35 years now, and during that time, I’ve catered about 10 weddings. But that was 10 years ago. When organising my daughter’s wedding, we saw the potential and challenges of wedding planning,” shares chef Damu.
While every dish served at the weddings will be tasted and approved by chef Damu, he prefers to focus on wedding planning rather than spending time in the kitchen. The menu features event staples as well as many of chef Damu’s signature recipes like vegetarian mutton biryani, vazhaikai vanjaram fry, Chettinad vellai brinji, Mukkani sweet pachadi and more . “Each recipe on the menu card comes from my experience. We will cater to every community, customising options based on religious and personal preferences. We just need the bride, groom, and their families,” he adds.
Chef Damu’s services extend beyond food. From décor and finding a priest to organising musicians and even planning the couple’s honeymoon, his team handles multiple aspects of the wedding. “My main aim is to help middle-class families serve good food at their weddings. Wedding food is a matter of pride. So we’ve created four packages, and families can choose based on their budget,” Damu explains.
The packages — Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum — include dishes from various parts of India, along with Pan Asian and Continental options. “I’m particularly known for my recipes from different parts of Tamil Nadu, and we intend to serve authentic flavours from every region. We have expert cooks from across the country. For sweets, we have mithaiwalas from Kolkata to prepare authentic Bengali desserts,” he says. “In addition to meals, we’ll also provide seer batchanam (sweets and savouries exchanged by the bride’s and groom’s families), and kattu saadham (mixed rice) packages.” Separate packages are also available for baby showers and 60th wedding anniversary celebrations.
Chef Damu says his team is ready to plan weddings nationwide. “Nowadays, many wedding halls don’t allow caterers to cook inside. We can rent a kitchen nearby and serve the food at the venue. For now, the menu is fully vegetarian, but phase two will introduce non-vegetarian specialities. We will update this menu once every three months.”
While the package brochure lists dishes for reception and wedding days, personalised plans can include mehendi, sangeet, and alcohol-free cocktail dinners. “I will personally attend every wedding we plan. During peak wedding season, I might attend the reception for one wedding and the ceremony for another, but I’ll ensure my presence,” chef Damu guarantees.
