Apple is preparing for its Awe Dropping launch event on September 9, with the iPhone 17 Air expected to steal the spotlight. Touted as the biggest design shift since the iPhone X in 2017, the new model is rumored to represent a bold departure from Apple’s existing design language. More than just another release, the iPhone 17 Air is anticipated to mark a new chapter in Apple’s smartphone evolution, redefining what users can expect from future iPhones.

The iPhone 17 Air is shaping up to be Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever, with a strikingly slim 5.5mm profile compared to the iPhone 16’s 7.8mm. This slimness is achieved through a redesigned internal structure and lighter materials, while still accommodating a 48MP wide camera within a horizontal pill-shaped bump.

Apple has also slightly reduced the display size from 6.7 inches on the iPhone 16 Plus to 6.6 inches, striking a balance between thinness and usability. Thanks to its titanium-aluminium hybrid frame, the device is expected to weigh just 145 grams while remaining sturdy. Colour options may include black, white, light gold, and light blue.

On the display and performance front, the iPhone 17 Air will feature Samsung’s LTPO OLED panel with a 30% brightness boost and support for 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates, previously exclusive to Pro models. However, it’s unclear if the panel can support always-on functionality. Powering the device will likely be Apple’s new A19 chip—or a trimmed-down A19 Pro variant—with 12GB RAM, putting it close to the Pro lineup in capability. Vapour chamber cooling is also expected, ensuring smooth performance under heavy workloads.

Battery life is a key concern given the slim design. The iPhone 17 Air is tipped to house a 2,800mAh cell, similar to the iPhone 12, though Apple is counting on chipset efficiency, high-density cells, and the new C1 modem to maintain endurance. Charging will include Qi 2.2 wireless charging at up to 25W, comparable to MagSafe speeds. Despite compromises, these upgrades aim to keep the Air competitive in performance and usability.

On the camera side, Apple is keeping things minimal with a single 48MP rear sensor, which means advanced features like spatial video won’t make it to this model. However, selfies get a major boost with a 24MP front camera across the iPhone 17 range. Connectivity will see improvements with Wi-Fi 7 support through Apple’s in-house chip, though mmWave 5G won’t be included. The device will retain features like the Action Button and MagSafe, while expanding eSIM-only support in more regions. Pricing is expected to start at $899 in the US and around ₹89,900 in India, though final pricing may vary with tariffs.
