Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during a protest held on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram.

The protest was organised in response to his remarks in which he denounced “organised efforts” to portray social reformer Sree Narayana Guru as a proponent of the Sanatana Dharma.

The agitation organised by the BJP’s Thiruvananthapuram district committee was taken out to the Secretariat. BJP district president V.V. Rajesh led the march.

The protesters accused Mr. Vijayan of outraging religious feelings of large sections by insulting the Sanatana Dharma, and misinterpreting the ideals of Sree Narayana Guru for vested interests. The controversial remarks, they alleged, were a ploy to distract the public from the misrule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
