NEW DELHI: The government is awaiting a response from former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s family regarding the proposed memorial in his honour.
According to sources on Tuesday, a plot adjacent to the one designated for Pranab Mukherjee at Smriti Sthal has been offered, with the government allocating Rs 25 lakh for the memorial.
The ministry of housing and urban affairs had earlier informed Singh’s family about the decision and requested them to establish a trust, a necessary prerequisite for public land allocation.
In January, government officials visited Rashtriya Smriti after announcing the memorial plan. Singh’s family members have been invited to inspect the proposed site but have not done so yet.
Rashtriya Smriti, located along the Yamuna riverbank, serves as a common site for the last rites and memorials of Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers.
Currently, it houses memorials for seven leaders, including former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee, P V Narasimha Rao, Chandra Shekhar, and I K Gujral. The remaining two available plots have now been earmarked for Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee.
Manmohan Singh, a Congress stalwart who played a key role in India’s economic liberalisation as finance minister in the Narasimha Rao government and also served as RBI Governor, passed away on December 26 at the age of 92.
