Diver drowns during vessel inspection at shipyard

A contract diver working with Cochin Shipyard Limited drowned on Tuesday (December 2, 2025) while carrying out repair work on a naval vessel. The deceased was identified as Anwar Sadhath, 25, a native of Vazhayur in Malappuram. He was employed by an underwater services firm based in Chullikkal.

According to the Kochi City police, the accident occurred around 4.15 p.m. while Sadhath was conducting a shaft inspection of the vessel. His colleagues sensed trouble when he failed to respond to repeated signals from the supervising team.

The company officials were immediately alerted, after which two divers entered the water and brought Sadhath to the surface. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he was declared brought dead.

The body was handed over to the family by the police after the autopsy was completed. A case of unnatural death has been registered.
