The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is commissioning a feasibility study for the proposed ‘overhead skyway cable car’ between Qutb Shahi Tombs and Golconda.

The urban development authority has notified a ‘request for proposals’ (RFP) for the study and invited tenders from consultants for the same.

The proposal for the cable car which is aimed to promote tourism in the heritage area has been long pending, with the Tourism department approving it way back in 2021. A feasibility study was mooted then too.

In the RFP document, HMDA mentioned that Qutub Shahi Tombs and Golconda Fort, located in the heritage precincts of the city, draw significant domestic and international tourist footfall.

Despite their spatial closeness, last-mile connectivity between these sites remains underdeveloped, limiting integrated heritage tourism and pedestrian accessibility, it said. The approach roads are often congested, and terrain constraints pose challenges for conventional transport solutions, the document noted, explaining the objective of the cable way.

An overhead cable car system is being considered as a potential mode of transport, offering an environmentally friendly solution that minimises ground-level disturbance, reduces travel time, and enhances tourism potential.

A feasibility study is being initiated to evaluate the technical, environmental, financial, and operational aspects of implementing a cable car system between these two heritage nodes. This study will guide further decision-making and detailed project development, if found viable.
