Labour Minister Santosh Lad has said that the State government, having taken the issue of removal of the sacred thread by the staff deployed for CET seriously, has asked the police to file FIR based on the inputs given by the aggrieved students and conduct a detailed probe.

Speaking to presspersons in Dharwad on Monday, he said that it was an unfortunate incident and uncalled for and there is no question of shielding the guilty.

Those who made the students remove the sacred thread will have to face action, he said.

On the Opposition charge that the incident was politically motivated, he termed it rubbish. He said that the government will stand by students and ensure that it did not harm their career.

Cess

On 5% cess for welfare of gig workers, the Minister said that a cess will be collected from aggregator companies, keeping in mind the health of gig workers who play a key role in the gig economy.

“An average gig worker who works for about 20 years is exposed to significant amount of carbon dioxide during his work. This is not about profits or losses for multinational companies. It is about the well-being of gig workers and their families. Therefore, the government has proposed the cess,” he said.

Clarifying that not all aggregator companies will be uniformly charged a 5% cess, he said there is no rush in taking the final decision.

As per the Cabinet decision, a gig workers board will be constituted in four months and all the stakeholders will be involved while framing rules and guidelines, he said.
