Flood evacuation mock drill at six locations in Chennai on May 16

A flood evacuation awareness and safety mock drill is scheduled to be conducted at 4 p.m. on Friday (May 16, 2025), at six locations in Chennai.

According to a press release, the drill will be held at Mathur Balasubramani Nagar, Sadayankuppam, Kannu Nagar, the bridge near Kasi Theatre, Porur, and Kotturpuram.

The drill was planned in response to the potential release of large volumes of floodwater from the Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Red Hills, and Cholavaram reservoirs, the release stated.

The event will be a mock exercise only, and people are advised not to panic. Normal life will not be disrupted due to the drill, which is undertaken to demonstrate the evacuation of people residing along riverbanks to safer locations during flood-related events, the release said. The officials of various departments, including Revenue, Water Resources, and Police, will participate.

In the event of actual flooding from the reservoirs, the public can contact helpline numbers 1077 and 1913 to report grievances, the release added.
