GHMC Commissioner inspects Murki Nala, and other drains

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner K. Ilambarithi has instructed officials to conduct a comprehensive survey of Murki Nala, a stormwater drain in Yakutpura. On Wednesday morning, the Commissioner, along with local MLA Jaffer Hussain and corporators, inspected several stormwater drains in Yakutpura.

During the visit, the Commissioner toured areas such as Rangeli Khidki, Hussain Koti, Maula ka Chilla, Ganga Nagar, and Rein Bazaar. He examined the overflowing sewage water on the streets of Rangeli Khidki. Since the drain from Jahangir Nagar to Ganga Nagar was constructed during the Nizam era, it has been overflowing frequently, explained the maintenance team. Mr. Ilambarithi directed the Projects Wing officials to provide a detailed report on the condition of the canal.

Later, the Commissioner inspected the works pertaining to the sewage canal at Maula ka Chilla in Ganga Nagar, and asked the agency to complete the work as soon as possible. Local residents reported that waste was accumulating in the canal, causing water stagnation and entry of sewage-mixed water into homes. In response, the Commissioner immediately instructed the Zonal Commissioner to clear the blockage.

Residents of Rein Bazar informed the Commissioner that water was not flowing through the existing box drain, causing stagnation. The MLA requested that proposals be sent for the box drain work, which would cost ₹1.6 crore. The Commissioner instructed the engineering officer to send a detailed report of the work, and once the tender process is complete, the work should be carried out on a warfooting to avoid any inconvenience to the public.

The Commissioner also emphasised the need for a master plan for stormwater drains in the city, similar to road development plans. The plan would ensure proper development, maintenance, and expansion of the city’s stormwater drainage system, helping to connect existing drains with the new urban expansion while addressing flood mitigation. Steps are being taken to initiate the second phase of the works with a budget of ₹545 crore, and the tender process had been completed, he informed. He directed the officials to complete the ongoing works in the old city by the upcoming monsoon.
