The King lives. Toho Studios officially announced Godzilla Minus Zero (stylised as Godzilla -0.0), the highly anticipated sequel to the 2023 global hit Godzilla Minus One. The reveal took place during this year’s “Godzilla Day” celebrations in Tokyo, where fans were treated to the film’s first teaser logo and artwork — a stark, monochrome design that recalls the minimalism of its predecessor.

Director Takashi Yamazaki, who made history with Godzilla Minus One by earning the franchise its first Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, is returning to write, direct, and oversee the film’s VFX. The announcement also confirmed that Godzilla Minus Zero will hit theatres worldwide in late 2026, with production scheduled to begin later this year in New Zealand and Norway.
While story details remain tightly under wraps, the title hints at a possible continuation of the post-war setting explored in Godzilla Minus One, which followed Japan’s struggle to rebuild amid the creature’s devastation. Many fans believe the new film could bridge the timeline toward the events of Ishirō Honda’s 1954 Godzilla, deepening its exploration of nuclear anxiety and Cold War paranoia.

Yamazaki has previously said his aim was to “reignite the fear” that defined the original 1954 classic, framing Godzilla once again as “a metaphor for war and the nuclear age.” Given his creative track record, Godzilla Minus Zero is expected to build on that vision with larger scale, international scope, and emotional depth.
With Godzilla Minus One having earned over $113 million globally on a modest $15 million budget, Toho’s next chapter in its 70-year kaiju legacy looks poised to stomp even louder at the box office.
