Hijab row at school: Kerala High Court closes plea

The Kerala High Court on Friday closed a plea by St. Rita’s School, Palluruthy, which challenged a directive issued by the Deputy Director of Education (DDE) to permit a Class VIII student of the school to attend classes by wearing the hijab (head scarf).

This was after the court was informed that the student’s parents had decided to discontinue her studies at the school and to admit her in another institution. The student’s counsel submitted that there was no need to escalate the situation.

A Bench of Justice V.G. Arun said the court was happy to note that better sense had prevailed and ultimately, fraternity, one of the foundational principles on which the edifice of Constitution is built, remained strong.

Seeking quashing of the DDE’s directive, the school had a week ago contended that officials of the State Education department had no authority over internal regulations (like uniform) of CBSE schools.
