The Horticulture Department has determined the impact of hydroponics system on cucumber cultivation at Zamin Uthukuli village in Pollachi Taluk, carried out under the National Horticulture Mission.
According to the officials, who undertook an inspection recently, cucumbers have grown well due to their rapid growth rate and requirements for warmth, moisture and nutrients.
The Department, sources said, has used ₹15.38 crore under the Mission, benefitting 9,105 farmers, in the last four and a half years.
According to the farmers, hydroponics in cucumber cultivation is advantageous to them owing to high yield, reduced water consumption, and high control of nutrient solution.
At Zamin Uthukuli, Selvaraj who had spent ₹60 lakh for the hydroponic system of cucumber cultivation, availed himself of ₹15.38 lakh subsidy benefit, official sources said.
Since cucumber, for which there is constant demand, can be cultivated throughout the year, there is income-generation all through the year, Mr. Selvaraj said.
District Collector Pawankumar Giriyappanavar, who accompanied the officials of the Department of Horticulture and Hill Crops, was apprised about the marketing avenues through involvement of youth.
The officials said the department was giving a push for hydroponic system since farmers will be able to make more profit in less land space.
