In 2025 South zone police get conviction for 1,402 accused in NDPS cases

The South Zone recorded a major breakthrough in NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) enforcement with convictions in 995 cases, leading to 1,402 accused persons being convicted. Among them, 62 were repeat offenders or individuals with prior criminal records.

According to a press release issued by the police department here on Wednesday, 17 convictions were secured in commercial-quantity NDPS cases, with Madurai (10) and Dindigul (4) districts accounting for the majority among them.

These outcomes reflect the Tamil Nadu Police’s focused crackdown on narcotics trafficking and their consistent follow-up in trial courts.

These conviction achievements for 2025 underscore the effectiveness of quality investigations, robust trial monitoring mechanisms and special focus on habitual offenders across the south zone. Dedicated efforts to secure punishment for history-sheeters and narcotics offenders reaffirm the department’s commitment to public safety.

The south zone police remain steadfast in ensuring thorough investigations, timely filing of charge sheets and active trial follow-up, thereby strengthening every stage of the criminal justice process for the protection of victims and society.

The police have recorded substantial achievements in securing convictions in sensitive criminal cases during the year 2025 (up to November), particularly in murder, attempt to murder and NDPS Act offences. A total of 1,894 accused have been convicted across 1,264 cases, reflecting meticulous investigation and coordinated prosecutorial efforts.

Notably, this includes 139 history-sheet (HS) rowdies among the convicted persons.

Convictions in murder cases

A total of 177 murder cases resulted in conviction across the south zone. Districts such as Theni (26), Tirunelveli (26), Thoothukudi (27) and Virudhunagar (22) recorded the highest numbers. The total number of accused convicted in murder cases stood at 331, of whom 65 were HS rowdies. Significantly, 25 HS rowdies in Tirunelveli and 10 HS rowdies in Thoothukudi were convicted, reflecting effective policing in traditionally sensitive and high-risk areas.

Convictions in attempt to murder cases

Convictions in attempt to murder cases also showed encouraging trends with 92 cases resulting in conviction and 162 accused persons being convicted. Districts that showed better performance include Theni (26), Ramanathapuram (13), Tirunelveli (13), and Kanniyakumari (14).

In addition, 12 HS rowdies were convicted in these cases, further highlighting intensified police efforts to neutralise habitual violent offenders, the release added.
