IND-W vs SL-W, Women’s Tri-series: Why is Indian team wearing black armbands against Sri Lanka?
Indian women’s cricket team paid tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack during its opening match against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo in the tri-series on Sunday.
Players of the Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the victims.
The tribute follows a brutal assault in Indian-administered Kashmir, where at least 26 people, including two foreign tourists, were killed. The attackers reportedly emerged from the forests near the Baisaran meadows in the upper reaches of Pahalgam on Tuesday afternoon.
“The cricketing community is deeply shocked and anguished by the tragic loss of innocent lives in the gruesome terror attack at Pahalgam,” said Devajit Saikia, Honorary Secretary of the BCCI. “ On behalf of the BCCI, while condemning this ghastly and cowardly act with strongest possible words, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls.”
“In sharing their pain and grief, we stand hand in hand at this hour of tragedy,” Saikia added.
South Africa is the third team participating in the tournament.
India is bowling first in the match reduced to 39 overs per side due to a delay of three hours due to rain.
