The passengers on board US military flight carrying immigrants from India, is set to be debriefed first upon landing. In a decision made at the highest level, it was decided that the flight will not be landing in Delhi-NCR.
Authorities emphasised on the need to understand the backgrounds of those who have crossed illegally, including whether they originated from India or another location. Sources mentioned that It’s also crucial to identify those responsible for facilitating the illegal crossings.
This comes a day after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said that Indian government is open to the legitimate return of “legitimate return” of Indians, who have been illegally in other countries, including the United States.
The EAM represented India as the Special Envoy to the PM and participated in the first Quad meeting held after Donald Trump took oath as the country’s 47th president.
The immigrants are being deported in a US military C-17 aircraft. According to reports, President Donald Trump has increasingly relied on the military to enforce immigration agenda, including deploying additional troops to the US.-Mexico border, using military aircraft to deport migrants, and opening military bases to house them.
The Pentagon has also begun facilitating flights to deport over 5,000 immigrants held by US authorities in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California.
So far, military flights have transported migrants to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras.
These military flights are an expensive way to move migrants. Reports mentioned that that US government’s military deportation flight to Guatemala last week likely cost at least $4,675 per migrant.
