Following an outbreak of avian flu (H5N1) in South India, including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Karnataka’s Health Department is on high alert.
While the virus primarily affects birds and human infections are rare and require direct contact with infected poultry, the State’s top health officials met on Monday evening to discuss the situation and ensure preventive measures are initiated.
At the meeting chaired by Harsh Gupta, Principal Secretary, Health, officials have been directed to step up surveillance, especially among poultry workers.
Avian flu, also known as bird flu, is a zoonotic viral disease that primarily affects poultry and may occasionally spillover to mammals, including humans and swine.
‘No need for panic’
Ansar Ahmed, State Project Director, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, told The Hindu that there was no need to panic, as only those who were in contact with the infected birds and health workers examining poultry workers are at risk.
“We are sensitising our field workers, including ASHAs, to spread awareness about preventive measures. While it is crucial to avoid contact with infected animals and maintain hand hygiene when handling birds or wild animals, use of protective clothing such as gloves, goggles and masks is advisable when working with birds and wild animals,” he added.
