Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami won its maiden MLS Cup title after defeating Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in the final at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday.
The diminutive Argentine legend set up two goals. He first won the ban and slipped in Rodrigo De Paul midway through the second half to give Inter Miami a 2-1 lead, before setting Tadeo Allende away in stoppage time to confirm the result.
Inter Miami had taken the lead early in the match after Allende’s attempted cutback was deflected into his own net by Whitecaps defender Edier Ocampo, before Ali Ahmed’s deflected strike ricocheted off the post to level the scores after the halfway line.
This is the first time Inter Miami has won the MLS Cup, having new made it past the first round prior to this year. It is the third trophy it has won since Messi joined the club, after the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the Supporters’ Shield in 2024.
