Local bodies in Coimbatore district have begun efforts to convert open wells and defunct borewells into rainwater harvesting (RWH) structures to make better use of runoff water during the monsoon season.

The district administration has tasked civic bodies with implementing these measures, under the guidance of District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar. The initiative is being led by Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran and Additional Collector (Development) Sanket Balwant Waghe.

“Our primary goal is to ensure that all buildings are equipped with rainwater harvesting systems,” Mr. Prabakaran said. “We began by installing eco block structures in all the Corporation schools. Now, we are identifying dry borewells for conversion using recharge shafts. Similarly, dry open wells will be restored to allow natural percolation.”

Letters have been sent to over 8,000 building owners whose premises exceed 3,000 square feet, urging them to install RWH systems. To support this initiative, a mobile application has been developed to carry out a detailed survey. Officials are using the app to record information on the number of borewells — both operational and defunct — open wells, buildings with RWH systems, and government premises. The survey began a week ago and is expected to reach maximum coverage by June, the Commissioner said.

“This is an ongoing initiative. Funding for implementing RWH systems in government buildings can be sourced through Corporate Social Responsibility contributions and the support of NGOs,” Mr. Prabakaran added.

To encourage wider participation in water conservation, the district administration and the Corporation will jointly issue certificates of appreciation to individuals and organisations within the Corporation limits who have adopted effective water management practices.

Premises such as commercial establishments and educational institutions that have implemented RWH systems will be acknowledged for their role in improving groundwater levels. Certificates will also be issued to building owners, voluntary organisations, and associations contributing to sustainable water use.

The Corporation has requested that details and photographs of those who have taken notable steps in water conservation be sent to its Integrated Command and Control Centre via the following contact numbers: 8925975980, 8925975981, 8925975982, 8925840945, and 9043066114.
