Extend railway network

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram, connecting the State to the national railway network.

While this is a welcome boost to the Northeast, there is still no direct train link between the central and southern districts of Tamil Nadu (barring Chennai) and the northeastern region.

To improve national integration and strengthen long-distance connectivity, we request the extension of Train No. 22611/22612 Chennai Central–New Jalpaiguri Express up to Sairang in Mizoram on one end and Kanniyakumari on the other. The proposed Kanniyakumari–Sairang weekly service via Tirunelveli, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Chennai Egmore can effectively utilise Tamil Nadu’s fully doubled and electrified routes, benefiting passengers across both regions.

Improper sanitation

A bus stop for Sabarimala devotees has been set up near the Madurai Mariamman Teppakulam, but it lacks adequate toilets and bathing facilities. As a result, several devotees are defecating in the vacant space behind the bus stop. With many houses located nearby, it causes health problems and a foul odour, affecting the residents a lot.

The Corporation and the authorities concerned should take immediate action and instruct them to use the toilet facilities inside the bus stop and the public toilet facilities outside.

Neglected stretch

Poor condition of road

I wish to draw attention to the poor condition of Sevugan Chettiyar Colony in Athikulam, where the road has remained severely damaged for a long time. This is the only stretch connecting Pudur Vandipadhai with several adjoining localities, yet it continues to be neglected.

Large potholes, stagnant water and blocked drainage have made daily movement unsafe and unhygienic.

What troubles residents even more is that all surrounding roads in the area have been properly laid, while only this particular stretch has been left unattended without any repair work.

Despite repeated complaints to the Corporation, no action has been taken so far. The Corporation should take fix this neglected road.

Cleanliness gap

The Meenakshi Temple complex and the Madurai Railway junction are recognised for their cleanliness and have received certifications for it.

If these locations can maintain such standards, why is it not possible to uphold the same level of cleanliness throughout the entire city? This question has been on the minds of common people in Madurai in recent times.

Damaged road

From Kalavasal to Achampathu (Theni road), all underground drainage manhole covers are not fitted in position, resulting in held-up traffic then and there. Cavities are formed around manholes and filled with dismantled brick pads.

The Highways Department should take care of this main road and maintain it every now and then.
