Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant has demanded that the upcoming film Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal be screened for experts before its release to address objections raised over certain scenes. The movie is based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

In a post on X, Mr. Samant urged the filmmakers to immediately remove any controversial content. He stated, “It is commendable that a Hindi film is being made to highlight the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. However, concerns have been expressed regarding objectionable elements in the film. It must be reviewed by experts and knowledgeable individuals before it is released.”

He warned that anything tarnishing Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy would not be accepted and added that further decisions would depend on the findings of the review. He asserted that the film would not be allowed to release unless the issues are addressed.

The call for a review follows comments by former Rajya Sabha member Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who also insisted the film be shown to historians to ensure it aligns with historical accuracy.

The controversy primarily revolves around a sequence in the trailer, released earlier this week, where Mr. Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai, are seen dancing with the lezim, a traditional instrument linked to Maharashtra’s cultural heritage. Chhaava is set to release in cinemas on 14 February.
