Maradu municipality to seek HC intervention to remove encroachment along Kundannoor-Chilavannoor road

The Maradu municipality will approach the Kerala High Court seeking police protection to remove the temporary structure of A.K.G. Memorial Library on the encroached land along Kundannoor-Chilavannoor road.

The eviction drive was stalled following protests by Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] activists on January 17. The civic body will also submit a report to District Collector N.S.K Umesh on the action taken to remove similar encroachments along the busy stretch.

Municipal chairperson Antony Ashanparambil said on Friday that all the identified encroachments, except the library, had been removed. “The eviction drive was stalled following protests by CPI(M) activists. There were only a few police personnel to help the municipal officials complete the drive last Friday. We will seek the court’s nod to remove the encroachment under adequate police protection,” he added.

The chairperson said a detailed report on the eviction drive would be submitted to the Collector soon. “We had brought the matter to his notice and will submit a report on the action taken till now and also on difficulties faced by officials while removing the library structure,” he added.

The civic body had served eviction notices on 10 encroachers along the road. The eviction process was initiated after the end of a 78-hour deadline issued by the municipal authorities.
