Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare M.R.K. Panneerselvam on Saturday (April 19, 2025) reviewed the progress of various drinking water projects being executed in Chidambaram by Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department at an outlay of ₹265.59 crore under Amrut 2.0 and Jal Jeevan Mission.
Chairing the review meeting, Mr. Panneerselvam said the combined drinking water scheme for Chidambaram municipality, Annamalai Nagar Town Panchayat and 36 habitations in 10 village Panchayats in Parangipettai and Kumaratchi unions, being executed at ₹255.64 crore, would have its source at the Kollidam River.
About 71% of the works have been completed, he said, adding that the combined drinking water supply scheme will benefit a total of 1,27,566 persons in Chidambaram municipality, Annamalai Nagar Town Panchayat and 10 Panchayats. The project will be commissioned soon, he said.
Apart from using three ground level water tanks and five overhead tanks, new overhead tanks are being built at two more places for the project to take drinking water to the residents of Chidambaram municipality and the two Panchayat unions. At present pipelines have been laid to a distance of 47 km as against the total length of 61 kms.
The Minister said the distribution of service connections to houses to provide protected drinking water has begun. The municipality will supply 135 litres of water per person per day. Similarly, stormwater drains have been laid to a length of 575 metres as against 1,128 metres in two streets in Chidambaram municipality, he said.
