Nobel Laureate MIT Scientist Daron Acemoglu Trashes ‘AI Will Steal All Jobs’ Buzz: ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’

Amid all the thousands of AI-fueled layoffs across silicon valley giants and speculations of most jobs being obliterated by artificial intelligence within the decade, there are few voices of skepticism from academia that refute industry leaders and domain experts. One of those voices that refuses to join the choir of AI tech bros is Nobel Laureate in Economic Science (2024) and MIT scientist Daron Acemoglu.
In his recent interview, the Turkish-American economist quipped, “I don’t expect any occupation that we have today to have been eliminated in five or 10 years’ time.”
He added, “If you are an AGI believer… you must have in your mind a list of occupations that will completely disappear.”
He further remarked,
“Don’t be taken by the hype. I think the hype is an enemy of business success. Instead, think where my most important resource, which is your human resource, can be better deployed.”
His 2024 paper written with several other scholars, entitled “The Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Socioeconomic Inequalities and Policy Making,” states how AI will “both exacerbate and ameliorate the existing socioeconomic inequalities.”
Speaking with the BBC, on the entities who share the largest piece of the AI pie in the market, the professor warned
Who controls powerful AI even before AGI could be a dictator.”
