NSS to support Adimaly landslide victims

National Service Scheme (NSS) units in the State will join hands to provide relief to families who lost their homes in the recent landslide that struck Adimaly in Idukki.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu said NSS will also construct a house, ‘Snehabhavan’, for Devanandan, a Class 9 student of SNDP Higher Secondary School, Adimali, whose family lost their home in the disaster.

According to the Minister, the NSS has been actively involved in providing immediate assistance to the affected families. Following the tragedy, the State NSS officer was directed to visit the affected site and assess the situation. Based on the evaluation, it was decided that various NSS units across Kerala would jointly take the initiative to construct the house.

The NSS units of the Vocational Higher Secondary and Higher Secondary sections of Adimali SNDP School will lead the construction activities. The project, estimated to cost around ₹8 lakh, will commence as soon as suitable land is made available. Electrical wiring and plumbing works will be completed with the support of NSS units from different Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), Dr. Bindu added.

The Minister also announced that the seventh edition of Rain International Nature Film Festival (RINFF), organised by the Jayaraj Foundation in association with the NSS, will be held at Marian College, Kuttikkanam, on November 28 and 29.

Ten-minute short films and documentaries created by over 3,000 NSS units across the State, all focusing on nature and environment, will be screened at the festival. The competition theme will include prevention of desertification, land conservation, and the protection of butterflies, bees and birds.

Film maker Jayaraj and State NSS officer D. Devipriya also attended the press conference.
