One killed, 5 injured in accident near Kovilpatti


One person was killed and five others were injured when a school van and a sports utility vehicle collided near here on Monday.

Police said a private school van was proceeding to Nalattinpudur to pick up children on Monday morning. When a speeding sports utility vehicle coming from Tirunelveli to Madurai hit the van after jumping the median. Van driver Karuppasamy, caretaker of the school children Ayyammal, two children in the van and car driver Augustine sustained injuries while one Shaik, 35, one of the occupants of the sports utility vehicle died on the spot.

On getting information, the Kovilpatti West police rushed to the spot along with fire and rescue services personnel to rescue the victims, who were rushed to Kovilpatti Government Hospital for treatment. The body of Shaik was sent for a post-mortem.

Kovilpatti West police have registered a case.
