OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Forecasts the Rise of AI Agents in the Workforce by 2025
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicts that AI agents will join the workforce by 2025, capable of making autonomous decisions, setting goals, and completing tasks with minimal human involvement. In a blog post titled ‘Reflections’ on January 6, 2025, Altman shared his thoughts on AI’s future and OpenAI’s progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Altman wrote, “We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies. AI development has taken many twists and turns and we expect more in the future.”

Altman expressed confidence that the company was on track to build AGI, a system that could match or surpass human intelligence, highlighting the potential for AI agents to significantly impact companies’ productivity by 2025.
The OpenAI CEO also reflected on OpenAI’s achievements and challenges, particularly the turbulent events of the past two years. He highlighted the company’s broader goals, noting that OpenAI is working towards superintelligence — AI systems capable of surpassing human intelligence and driving scientific advancements. “With superintelligence, we can accomplish anything,” he stated.

He added, “Superintelligent tools could massively accelerate scientific discovery and innovation well beyond what we are capable of doing on our own, and in turn massively increase abundance and prosperity.”
Altman also reflected on the turmoil of late 2023 when he was briefly ousted as CEO, calling it a failure of governance and expressing regret over his actions. He believes he has grown into a more thoughtful leader since then. He wrote, “The whole event was, in my opinion, a big failure of governance by well-meaning people, myself included. Looking back, I certainly wish I had done things differently, and I’d like to believe I’m a better, more thoughtful leader today than I was a year ago.”
As per a report by Bloomberg, OpenAI is set to release an AI agent named ‘Operator’ this month, which will automate tasks like coding and travel booking on a user’s computer. This follows similar announcements from Microsoft and Anthropic, introducing tools that perform tasks like moving a mouse or typing.
