Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday (February 11, 2025) urged the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to operate all the thermal power plants in the State to ensure self-sufficiency in electricity generation.
In a statement, he said it was not acceptable to purchase electricity at ₹20 per unit when the State could generate electricity at a cost of ₹6 per unit. Despite increasing the tariff, if electricity is continued to be procured at such a higher rate, the Tangedco will never function on profit, he said.
If the State government expedites the ongoing work at thermal power plants on a war footing, there is no need to purchase electricity from private companies at a higher cost, said Dr. Anbumani, alleging that in the last 20 years, only 2,100 MW capacity of thermal power projects had been implemented in the State, and no such projects were taken up in the last decade.
