More than 1,000 participants, including healthcare professionals, students, and members of the public, joined the “Walk in Pink” walkathon organised by MGM Cancer Institute on Sunday (November 2, 2025) to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The event began at the MGM Cancer Institute on Nelson Manickam Road and concluded at Tower Park, Anna Nagar. Mohan Telkatwar, officer-in-charge, Medical Services, Headquarters, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Indian Navy Area, took part in the event.
M.A. Raja, director and senior consultant, Medical Oncology, MGM Cancer Institute, emphasised the importance of early detection and preventive care, noting that breast cancer accounts for nearly 30% of all cancers among women in India. “In Tamil Nadu, Chennai records the highest age-standardised rate of breast cancer in the country, with over half the cases diagnosed in advanced stages,” he said.
Veda Padma Priya, clinical lead and senior consultant, Breast Oncology highlighted the importance of lifestyle choices in cancer prevention. “Simple habits such as regular physical activity, a balanced diet, stress management, and avoiding pollution can significantly reduce cancer risk,” she said.
