Chairman V. Ramalingam Daily Vegetable Market, one of the oldest markets in Salem and also known as Pal Market at Shevapet, will be rebuilt at ₹5.15 crore.

Vendors sell vegetables, fruits and milk and wholesale grocery outlets operate on the century-old Pal Market spread across 75 acres. While there were more than 200 shops in the market earlier, now there are 110 vegetable and fruit shops functioning in the market.

The market received Clean and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Market certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in 2022 as part of its Eat Right initiative. As the shops were damaged in the market, Salem Corporation decided to demolish the market. During his visit to Salem in June this year, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that Pal Market would be rebuilt. Based on that, the Corporation invited tender and finalised the bidder in the first week of November.

Salem Corporation officials said the work order would be issued in the next few days. As a new place was yet to be identified for the functioning of the vegetable shops temporarily, the work order was yet to be given. As many as 110 new shops would be constructed in 18 months, the officials added.
