Portugal beats Austria 1-0 to win maiden FIFA U-17 World Cup title
Portugal beat Austria 1-0 in the final to win the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on Thursday.
Benfica’s Anisio Cabral scored the only goal of the match in the 32nd minute from a cut-back by Duarte Cunha. The striker took his tournament tally to seven goals, one behind Austria’s Johannes Moser, who took home the golden boot.
Portugal, who hadn’t qualified for the previous nine editions since 2003, overcame Belgium, Mexico, Switzerland and Brazil in the knockout stages to make the final.
Portugal, coached by Joao Santos, followed up its U-17 European Championship victory earlier in the summer by claiming its maiden World Cup title.
Austria reached the final for the first time with eye-catching results over England, Japan and Italy in the knockouts.
