Mumbai Meteors defeated Bengaluru Torpedoes 15-13, 15-13, 18-20, 15-10 at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday to claim the top spot in the Prime Volleyball League 2025 points table. Shubham Chaudhary was named the Player of the Match.
Having secured the first place in the standings, the Meteors will face the team that finishes fourth in the first semifinal on Friday. The second-placed Bengaluru Torpedoes will play the Ahmedabad Defenders, which finished in the third position, in the second semifinal.
The Meteors started well with setter Om Lad running the play from the middle. Mathias Loftesnes and Shubham kept asking questions of Bengaluru with constant spikes. The Torpedoes’ blockers Jishnu P.V. and Mujeeb M.C. tried their best, but Shubham managed to find the right spot with his spikes.
In Matt West’s absence, Torpedoes’ setter Sandeep did well to find Joel Benjamin on multiple occasions. But Mumbai’s Petter Ostvik remained alert and made solid blocks. Amit Gulia launched thunderous spikes, which contributed to the Meteors taking the second set.
Jalen Penrose paired up with Mujeeb to put up a better defensive show. Amit kept up the pressure from Mumbai but Bengaluru held its nerve and pulled one set back.
Service pressure from Kamaal Karthik put pressure back on the Torpedoes and Ostvik kept making solid blocks in the middle. Lad’s skilful slow serve surprised Penrose and the Meteors consolidated on their lead to settle the contest.
