Thoothukudi mayor Jegan Periyasamy has said that the public did not suffer any disruption in the recent rainfall, as the stagnant rainwater was cleared immediately, in most of the areas.

He made this statement while addressing the corporation council meeting held here on Friday.

A total of 17 resolutions were unanimously passed at the meeting, including the allotment of ₹8.04 crore for providing three meals a day to the Thoothukudi corporation’s sanitation workers.

Upon the commencement of the meeting, Mr. Jegan congratulated Arumugam, a differently abled nominated member, who participated in the council meeting for the first time, and ward 34 councillor S. Chandirabose, who recently received library enthusiast award from Directorate of Public Libraries-School Education department.

At the meeting AIADMK councillors Veerabagu and Mandhiramoorthy raised concerns about the issues prevailing in their respective wards 35 and 51. They pointed out that although the corporation had earlier stated that the rainwater would not stagnate anywhere in Thoothukudi, many areas have experienced waterlogging, especially around the district court campus and Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital.

Responding to their concerns, Mr. Jegan said that heavy rainfall has been recorded on October 20, November 22 and 23, which resulted in waterlogging in several areas. However, rainwater was pumped out immediately, preventing any hardship to the public.

He noted that only wards 16 and 17 experienced stagnation due to the absence of proper drainage. “Even there, the water was removed within three days using pumps. New stormwater drain routes are being created for these areas and work will be completed soon,” he added.

The mayor further noted that the major stormwater drain in the city Puckle canal, which stretches for seven kilometers, will be widened and work for the project will commence in January.

“As rainfall is expected to continue till January, continuous monitoring is being carried out. All measures have been taken to ensure that no hardships occur to public,” Mr. Jegan said.

Thoothukudi corporation commissioner S. Priyanka, Deputy mayor S. Jenitta and other officials were present.
