The Tamil film industry is in mourning following the sudden death of actor and comedian Robo Shankar, who passed away on September 18 at the age of 46. The performer reportedly collapsed on a film set and was rushed to hospital, where his condition deteriorated.
Robo Shankar, born Shankar, earned his stage name for the robot-style dance routines that first brought him fame on television and in village shows. He went on to become a household name in Tamil cinema, admired for his energy, wit, and signature style. His film journey began with uncredited roles in the late 1990s, including Padayappa, before finding recognition in Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara. From there, he built a steady career with memorable turns in Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, Maari, Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, Viswasam, Pa Paandi and most recently Singapore Saloon.
Tributes have poured in from across the industry. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan shared an emotional note on social media, writing, “Robo Shankar. Robo is just a pseudonym. In my dictionary, you are a human. Therefore, my younger brother. So, will you just leave me and go? You left, your job is done. My job remains unfinished. You left tomorrow for us. Therefore, tomorrow is ours.”
Actress Simran remembered him as a performer who “brought smiles to millions,” adding, “Prayers and strength to his family during this difficult time. Om Shanti.”
Actor Karthi noted the personal toll of lifestyle choices, writing, “It aches to see how destructive choices over time can erode health. A great talent gone too soon.”
Music composer Santosh Narayanan recalled Shankar’s early performances in 2003 as “inspiring,” while actor Vishnu Vishal pointed to their collaboration, saying, “Probably the most iconic comedy scene in my films… Without him, it wouldn’t have been this memorable.”
Fans and colleagues alike have filled social media with condolences, praising Shankar’s boundless humor and his ability to light up a scene.
