Season’s musings
It was the Christmas tree at the mall, towering above the shop signages, decorated with its customary tinsel and fake snowflakes, that made me wonder at the frantic effort across the world to look festive this time of the year.
Yes, in India, we celebrate a host of festivals with gusto. But none of them carry within them the universality of the end of year holiday season that transcends religious fervor to sort of scramble for the cozy blanket of illusion to cover us up lest we get left out in the December cold . And this cold is not so much about the temperature outside as the uncomfortable draught of reality that everyone of us tries to ignore.
It’s the reality of the losses we were forced to confront in the year that’s about to end. And also the reality of our fears about the losses that the new year could bring. But then we also have the power to lose ourselves in the gifts of the season – joy, merriment, bonding with family and friends. And perhaps this power is what pumps up the resolve and fuel the reservoirs of faith to take on what the new year has in store. No wonder however old one gets, Santa Claus never goes out of style!
Happy Holiday, everyone!
