Shehbaz, Sisi discuss ME, subcontinent tensions – Pakistan



ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a phone conversation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi expressed gratitude for Egypt’s balanced approach during Pakistan-India conflict and also discussed developments in the Middle East, particularly the alarming situation in Gaza.

PM Shehbaz conveyed his profound gratitude to the Egyptian president for his country’s constructive role, its balanced statements and proactive diplomacy throughout the rece­nt crisis in South Asia that helped defuse tensions between Pakistan and India, an official press release issued by the PM Office, said.

The prime minister paid rich tribute to the valiant armed forces of Pakistan for courageously defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and stressed that Pakistan remained committed to upholding the ceasefire understanding with India in the interest of regional peace.

He also drew the Egyptian president’s attention to the significance of the Indus Waters Treaty that India claimed to have held in abeyance.

While discussing situation in the Middle East, the PM urged the international powers to ensure consistent and timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. He also expressed the hope that the UN Conference on two-state solution next month would yield meaningful outcome.

He expressed satisfaction over Pakistan-Egypt relations and called for enhancing bilateral trade and investment.

President Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s desire of stronger bilateral ties with Pakistan. He also appreciated Pakistan for sending humanitarian assistance to Gaza. The PM later extended an invitation to the Egyptian president to undertake an official visit to Pakistan that he graciously accepted.
