The Greater Chennai City Traffic Police (GCTP) said that overspeeding, and not bike racing, caused the accident on the Peters Road flyover on Wednesday (November 5, 2025) night in which two motorists were killed.

At around 10.45 p.m. on Wednesday, the fatal accident occurred on the Peters Road flyover in Royapettah when Syed Sardar Basha, 19 — one of the deceased — was riding his motorcycle at high speed and in a reckless manner. He lost control of the vehicle and rammed into another two-wheeler ridden by Kumaran, 49, who was coming from the opposite direction.

Both riders died on the spot due to the impact of the collision. Another motorcyclist, Mohammed Suhail, who was riding a two-wheeler behind Syed’s bike, also crashed into the fallen vehicle and sustained minor injuries.

A press release issued by the GCTP on Friday (November 7) stated that the investigation revealed one of the motorcycles involved in the crash had a 155cc engine. The vehicle belonged to Sharif, a college friend of Syed. The probe found that Syed, who was unfamiliar with the bike’s power, rode it at high speed and in a reckless manner, lost control, and caused the fatal accident by colliding with the Honda Shine ridden by Kumaran.

The police said that the mishap was not caused by bike racing or stunt riding.

To curb illegal bike races and stunts, special vehicle check teams have been deployed across the city for continuous monitoring under the directions of Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun and the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) G. Karthikeyan. Additionally, workshops involved in the illegal modification of vehicle parts are being closely monitored for violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, the press release stated.
