There will be a sense of déjà vu when chief ministers of the southern states (or their deputies) meet in Chennai on March 22. As they devise strategies to oppose the Union govt plan to increase Lok Sabha seats, it’s not just the delimitation debate that’s making history repeat itself. Leadership is doing the same.

Taking the lead in rallying opposition parties – and reaching out to even the BJP govt in Odisha, a relatively small state that could be disadvantaged by delimitation – Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin is following in the footsteps of his father, as a statesman bringing together regional powers for a common cause.
