Students told to learn about quality standards of products

The ‘Learning Science via Standards’ concept launched by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will bridge the gap between theory and practice in science education and help students to understand the significance of quality and standards, BIS Director and Vijayawada head Prem Sajani Patnala has said.

Addressing a two-day workshop organised by BIS, in association with Andhra Pradesh State Council of Education Research (APSCERT) for mentors of Standard Clubs on Friday, Ms. Sajani elucidated the practical applications of scientific laws and principles behind some commonly used products.

Best teacher awardee by the Ministry of Education, Dr. Iyer Vijayalakshmi Kasinath, urged the mentors to participate in the activities of Standard Clubs to have better knowledge on quality and standards.

The BIS is putting in efforts through ‘Learning Science via Standards’ to help students understand the practical applications of scientific concepts, the Director said.

BIS Deputy Director D. Vivek Vardhan Reddy and Joint Controller, Legal Metrology, G. Rajesh Kumar explained about product certification, ISI mark, Hallmark, Registration mark, Legal Metrology (package commodities) Rules.

The BIS and the Legal Metrology officials gave a presentation on laboratory procedures used to assess the quality of PVC pipes at the Central Institute of Petrochemical Engineering and Technology (CIPET) Laboratory in Vijayawada.
