TCS To Layoff 12,000 Staff To Deploy AI At Scale; The Internet Jibes ‘Amrit Kaal In IT Sector’

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is gearing up to slash 2% of its global workforce or 12,261 employees. “This is not because of AI giving some 20 percent productivity gains,” the TCS CEO K. Krithivasan told Moneycontrol. However, the company statement mentions otherwise. It states,
“TCS is on a journey to become a Future-Ready organisation. This includes strategic initiatives on multiple fronts, including investing in new-tech areas, entering new markets, deploying AI at scale for our clients and ourselves, deepening our partnerships, creating next-gen infrastructure, and realigning our workforce model.”
It further adds,
Towards this, a number of reskilling and redeployment initiatives have been underway. As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organization whose deployment may not be feasible. This will impact about 2% of our global workforce, primarily in the middle and the senior grades, over the course of the year.”
Regarding the impact of the layoff, the Tata-owned Indian IT giant says
This transition is being planned with due care to ensure there is no impact on service delivery to our clients.”
TCS adds,
We understand that this is a challenging time for our colleagues likely to be affected. We thank them for their service, and we will be making all efforts to provide appropriate benefits, outplacement, counselling, and support as they transition to new opportunities.”
Meanwhile, the TCS CEO Krithivasan stated that the layoff decision is a “hard but necessary reckoning.” He also stated that the layoffs will be done gradually through FY26. He quipped, “We will do it in a very, very compassionate way.”

Reactions poured in on social media, with netizens lashing out at the state of affairs. One user quipped, “The country is slowly heading toward a catastrophe it is not prepared for.” Another remarked, “Agar TCS mein job safe nahi hai to aap ye maan lo ki duniya mein kahin bhi job ab safe nahin hain.”
A third user wrote, “First they came for the freshers. Then for the benchers. Then for the ones on long notice periods. Now even billable ones can’t bill their anxiety to the client. TCS says it’s “business needs.” But the need was never loyalty or hard work — it was cheaper, faster, less human.”
One netizen jibed, “12,000 jobs gone. But don’t worry, we’re still calling it “strategic restructuring” because “panic firing” doesn’t sound investor-friendly.”
Another commented, “TCS ab government company nahi rahi.” Yet another took a dig, “Amrit Kaal in the IT field.”
An irate user slammed the government for the mess.
Govt se pvt. job ke bare me mat pucho, govt. job ke bare me mat pucho, mehngai ke bare me mat pucho, mandi ke bare me mat pucho. Bas ye pucho aam kaise khate hai, kitne baje uthate hai.”
