The Karumathampatti police in Coimbatore have registered a case against a teacher at Elachipalayam Government Middle School for allegedly caning a Class II student, Shashini (7), on November 7.
According to the police, the teacher, Periyanayagi, struck the student on the lower part of her left arm with a stick while she was playing with classmates.
The child’s mother, Parimala (34), noticed swelling and minor bruising below the wrist when Shashini returned home. Acting on the teacher’s assurance to cover medical expenses, Shashini was admitted to a private hospital in Avinashi on November 13. The teacher reportedly paid the medical bill of ₹41,000. The girl was discharged on November 17 but continued to experience pain, prompting admission to Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital on November 21 for further treatment.
The incident came to light when her mother decided to lodge a complaint with the police, and a case was registered on Wednesday.
Chief Education Officer R. Balamurali told The Hindu the Block Education Officer is enquiring into the matter. Once the report is submitted, necessary action will be initiated. He added that the Education Department is coordinating with the Health Department regarding the girl’s medical care and support.
The Karumathampatti police are investigating the incident, and Shashini is reported to be in a stable condition.
