Fans of The Apothecary Diaries have plenty to celebrate following the anime’s second anniversary event. TOHO Animation has officially announced that the hit historical mystery will return for a third season, and an all-new original movie.
Season 3 will be split into two cours, premiering in October 2026 and April 2027, respectively. Alongside the news, TOHO released a special commemorative trailer revisiting highlights from the first two seasons, set to the series’ memorable opening themes. The announcement capped off the event with confirmation of an upcoming feature film penned by The Apothecary Diaries creator Natsu Hyuuga. The movie, currently untitled, will tell a completely original story and is slated to premiere in Japan in December 2026.
While the new season will continue adapting the light novels, the movie promises to explore new facets of Maomao’s world — a fitting reward for the series’ ever-growing international fanbase. The franchise’s acclaim extends beyond Japan, with volumes 12 and 13 recently winning “Best Continuing Series” at the American Manga Awards.
The Apothecary Diaries follows Maomao, a sharp-witted apothecary who finds herself entangled in the intrigue of the imperial court, unraveling medical mysteries and political secrets with unflinching curiosity. Season 2 deepened the story’s emotional and political complexity, delving into Jinshi’s past and Maomao’s growing awareness of her own origins.
For Season 3, returning director Akinori Fukesada will once again lead production, ensuring consistency in tone and style. Meanwhile, The Apothecary Diaries Season 1 director Norihiro Naganuma will helm the upcoming film.
