Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai’s cool countenance to brush aside an object hurled at him while asking rattled lawyers to continue with court proceedings without missing a beat on Monday (October 6, 2025) is reminiscent of an incident when another Chief Justice of India, Justice M. Hidayatullah, used his presence of mind to wrestle a knife-wielding assailant in the same court room 57 years ago to save his fellow judge Justice A.N. Grover’s life.

Supreme Court clears deck for appointment of V-Cs to 8 State varsities in Bengal

The Supreme Court on Monday (October 6, 2025) cleared the appointment of Vice-Chancellors to eight State universities in West Bengal after noting that both Governor C.V. Ananda Bose and the State government had accepted the recommendations of an independent search-cum-selection committee headed by former Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit.

India has always exerted its strategic autonomy, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said, referring to India’s decision to sign a friendship pact with the Soviet Union in 1971, as a “necessary” choice, given the triangular threats India faced from the other big powers, the United States and China. Speaking at the launch of the Aravalli Summit, organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) School of International Studies, marking its 70th anniversary, Mr. Jaishankar, an alumnus of the school himself, said that it was necessary for students of foreign policy to factor a future of multi-alignment and multipolarity.

500 tourists stuck in Darjeeling rescued; death toll rises to 28

The death toll in the North Bengal floods has climbed to 28, with five more deaths being reported on Monday (October 6, 2025) from Nagrakata in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. Of this number, 23 people were killed by landslides in the Darjeeling district on October 4 and October 5. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed poor flood management by the Centre for the devastation.
