The police on Wednesday installed traffic signals at Uppilipalayam junction in a bid to streamline vehicular movement. Traffic police officers said that three signals were installed at the junction for vehicles descending the newly-opened G.D. Naidu flyover, vehicles entering Avinashi Road from Red Cross junction and those coming down from Avinashi Road old flyover.

The police decided to install the signals as the junction, which is now also having a roundabout, witnessed congestion after the opening of the new flyover. City Police Commissioner A. Saravanan Sundar and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Ashok Kumar monitored the functioning of the new arrangement for over an hour on Thursday evening.

As per the new arrangement, vehicles coming down the old flyover are not allowed to enter Dr. Nanjappa Road by taking a left turn immediately after descending it. Vehicles coming from the underpass of the old flyover towards Uppilipalayam, however, cannot enter the junction but should take a left turn to Dr. Nanjappa Road.

Vehicles entering Avinashi Road from Red Cross junction can have a free left to the old flyover. Those heading to the new flyover or towards LIC Junction should follow the signal and stick to the right side of the road when the signal is red. Similarly, vehicles coming down the new flyover and those coming through the service road from LIC Junction to Uppilipalayam junction can take a free left towards Red Cross junction. Those heading towards the old flyover should follow the signal.

On Thursday, the police also made a new arrangement for vehicles coming down the new flyover to take a ‘U’ turn to head towards LIC junction.

Traffic police personnel have been posted at the junction to guide motorists to get familiarised with the new arrangements.

“Motorists are advised to not block free lefts at any signals. They must also use indicators so that other motorists will be aware of their direction,” said Mr. Kumar.
