Two youth held for threatening to immolate girl on Walltax Road
The Elephant Gate police on Friday arrested two youth for allegedly threatening to immolate a 19-year-old girl after she allegedly rejected a proposal of love from one of them.
Around 9 p.m. on Thursday, when the girl was returning home after work, the youth, who came on a motorcycle, waylaid her at the Kalyanapuram bus stop on Walltax Road and began arguing with her. One of them doused her in petrol that he had brought in a can and threatened to immolate her. Upon noticing the altercation, passers-by intervened and rescued the girl. The duo fled the spot on their motorcycle.
Following a complaint from the girl, the police investigated and arrested the duo, who were identified as R. Arjun, 20, and his friend Y. James, 20, of Elephant Gate. The police said Arjun was in love with the girl for sometime. Recently, she began distancing herself from him since she was unhappy with his behaviour. However, Arjun continued stalking her. As she continued to ignore him, Arjun grew frustrated, and he and James threatened her, the police said.
The police booked a case for charges including wrong restraint and criminal intimidation. The youth were remanded in judicial custody.
