NEW DELHI: A massive avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labour camp between Mana and Badrinath at around 7.15 am on Friday, leaving 42 burried workers inside eight containers and one shed.
A video shared by PTI showed a rescue operation underway, with rescuers braving extreme weather conditions to evacuate those trapped under the snow. Four rescuers are seen carrying a worker on their shoulders, while a crane clears the snow-covered path ahead to facilitate the operation. The challenging terrain and low visibility due to ongoing snowfall are making the operation even more difficult.

So far, 42 trapped road construction workers have been successfully rescued, while efforts continue to save the remaining individuals. The rescue operation is being led by the Garhwal 9th Brigade and BRO, with support from multiple agencies, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), district administration, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
An SDRF team has been dispatched from Joshimath, while another remains on standby in Dehradun, ready for airlift if required.
The Indian Army’s Ibex Brigade swiftly responded, deploying over 100 personnel, including doctors, ambulances, and heavy equipment.
