Valve Announces Steam Machine, Its Bold Comeback To The Console Market
Valve is making a comeback to the console market with a new version of the Steam Machine, a powerful PC/console hybrid set to launch in early 2026. Running on SteamOS, the device promises 4K gaming at 60fps and up to 2TB of SSD storage. Positioned as the living room counterpart to the Steam Deck, but six times more powerful, the Steam Machine will debut alongside a refreshed lineup of Steam hardware, including a new controller and next-generation Steam VR headset, signaling Valve’s renewed push into integrated gaming ecosystems.

Unlike traditional consoles, users can install any operating system, including Windows, and run any apps they choose. Valve highlighted this openness in its announcement, stating, “Who are we to tell you how to use your computer?” The company also revealed two storage variants — 512GB and 2TB, and confirmed that the Steam Machine will be bundled with the new Steam Controller, though both will also be available separately.

The new Steam hardware family, which includes the Steam Frame VR headset, is set to launch globally in early 2026. While Valve has not yet announced pricing, the Steam Machine and other hardware will ship to regions where the Steam Deck is already available, including the US, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, and South Korea. However, as with the Deck, India won’t see an official release, though imported units are expected to appear later at higher prices. This launch marks Valve’s second attempt at a console, following the ill-fated 2015 Steam Machine, which struggled against established console giants.

This time, Valve’s bet on hybrid hardware seems better timed. The 2026 Steam Machine, which resembles a compact Xbox Series X, runs SteamOS and supports 4K gaming at 60fps with FSR frame generation. It allows users to pair up to four Steam Controllers, features a customisable LED front strip, and supports both DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 outputs for 4K and 8K displays. The console also integrates directly with Steam’s ecosystem, supporting Deck Verified ratings, Xbox Cloud Gaming via Windows, and streaming capabilities for devices like the Steam Deck or Steam Frame headset.
Under the hood, it’s a powerhouse: a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU (6 cores, 12 threads) and RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units, paired with 16GB DDR5 RAM and 8GB GDDR6 VRAM. It includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, multiple USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and a high-speed microSD slot. Valve claims the new Steam Machine delivers six times the horsepower of the Steam Deck, though not necessarily six times the performance, due to differences in power consumption and cooling design.
Alongside the console, Valve introduced the next-generation Steam Controller, which uses magnetic thumbsticks with TMR sensors, Grip Sense gyro controls, and HD haptics. The controller connects wirelessly via a magnetic charging puck with a USB-C port and works across the Steam ecosystem, from PC and Deck to the new Steam Machine and VR headset. With a dedicated Steam button, quick-access menu, and dual trackpads, Valve’s redesigned controller rounds out the company’s 2026 lineup, reinforcing its push to unify PC, console, and VR gaming under the Steam platform.
